Project Detail

Unconventional timber frame.

Designed by Carbonlite, this robust construction method is essentially an composite timber box beam system which works as a portal frame to resist the incredibly windy conditions on the Scottish island. Plywood gusset plates are used at connections between the roof and walls to create the necessary rigidity to resist these horizontal forces. Large sections of the building were prefabricated in the Carbonlite factory which made the erection both easy and fast.
